Hebridean WorkshopThis event was not advertised on the website previously, as filled through a social media comment. However, I have just received the cancellation of one place. Here are the details and description.
The Outer Hebrides are quite unique. These remote Scottish Islands feature superb light, stunning beaches, rocky coves and fjord like inlets together with windswept sand dunes, clear blue and turquoise sea. Add in abandoned crofts, wildlife including seals, eagles and otters and the photographic possibilities are truly wonderful. (I am biased.)
As you may have seen, I visit the Hebrides often and have spent a great deal of time photographing the islands of Skye, Harris and Lewis. Previously my workshops have centred on Skye but this time, Harris and Lewis are the sole attention.
We will start each day with a full breakfast before selecting different areas of Harris and Skye at different times according to the light, tides and weather. The stunning light experienced here is created by the extremely changeable weather conditions. The oft termed four seasons in a day can really be an understatement! It will rain; It may snow; It will be windy; It will be cold; There will be no visibility; It is boggy; It is very remote; There are very few loos; There are hardly any shops or café’s that will be open; I love it. I hope you do too.
The subject matter will be landscape predominantly and we will also review images together with some Lightroom work as well. A reasonable level of fitness is required as some hills and rocky terrain will be encountered.
From the south of England, it is a long way and allowing a full two days of travel is recommended. If flying, Inverness is the best airport if you are not flying direct to Stornaway, the main town of Lewis.
From Inverness for which there are regular BA flights, it is a 90 minute drive to Ullapool, from which the main ferry to Stornaway departs, with the crossing taking c. 2.5 hours. From Stornaway it is an hour’s drive to our base at the Harris Hotel at Tarbert, where I will meet you. Harris Hotel
Alternatively, if driving from the south, the ferry at the port of Uig on the north of Skye will take you directly to Tarbert on Harris with the crossing taking c.1.75 hours. The hotel is 500 metres from the ferry terminal.
If flying to Glasgow and driving, it will take you through stunning scenery via Loch Lomond, Rannoch Moor and Glencoe, Fort William, Glen Sheil, Eileen Donan Castle and the Isle of Skye.
The Harris Hotel is a family owned and run hotel with very friendly staff. It is clean and comfortable and the food is good.
The hotel will provide us with packed lunches to take with us for the day and I will have flasks for tea and coffee as required. There will be a maximum of four participating workshoppers and we will travel around in my car. We shall return to the hotel early evening where we will meet up with any non-participant partners. Unfortunately non -participating partners will not be able to be accommodated in my car travelling around during the day.
We will eat at the hotel each evening with dinners additionally charged as taken. Whether you choose one, two, three or more courses is your choice. Starters are available priced between £5-10, Main courses £13 – 25 and dessert £5-7. Additionally, pub classics are offered priced around £12.50 each. For reference, I usually have two courses costing around £20, but as I say, the choice is yours.
