WORKSHOPS

This is an exciting year for me as far as workshops are concerned. Firstly I am running more of them, secondly at different locations and thirdly working with different people.

Next week I’m off to Jersey again for a full weekend workshop and two days of ‘one to one’ or to be precise ‘one to two’ training. This is my second workshop visit there which at least means that I got it right last time! There is talk of going back over the first weekend in June but more of that if we can put it together. Drop me a line if you’re interested.

The full programme of workshops is available on the Photographic Workshops page, some of which only have a few places left already – even the end of October! Briefly they include Portland Bill and Purbeck in February; A Day in Dorset in April; Tuscany in May; New Forest in September and Autumn colours at the end of October.

The New Forest in September is when I’m running two, one day workshops with the world famous photographer David Noton. They are both two, full days including early morning starts, with the base being the barn at the Royal Oak at Fritham in the New Forest, which has just been voted ‘Country Pub of the Year’ by the Good Pub guide. There are only two places left on the Saturday and only a few more available on the Sunday, so if you are interested in meeting the man himself and learning from him - I definitely have – then don’t miss the opportunity. Actually he’s been really annoying lately frequently letting me know how wonderful it is in South Africa, where he and his lovely wife Wendy have been photographing recently and how in love he is with a 500mm lens. Rotten sod.

For those who are novice to intermediate in experience, there is a full programme of PhotoTreks which I run with Barry Whitcher at various locations in and around the New Forest, National Trust properties and Exbury gardens which can be viewed via the link here: PhotoNewForest.Com

PhotoTreks are operated under PhotoNewForest which is in association with
Canon Uk

Along with these events, I will also be offering opportunities for people to ‘Join Me’ on my photo shoots and the ‘One to One’ sessions previously mentioned. So, a busy year, but what do I do in the meantime – read on.

SHOOT SCHEDULE

I’ve been catching the 4am ferry across to the Isle of Wight and staying until after sundown taking photographs and I’ve still to make another trip across. My deadline is the 31st January, so I’m really up against it, especially as I’m away in Jersey for 6 days. The processing of these shots
seems like it’s taken forever, but in reality it’s only been a few days spread out over a few months.

The River Hamble estuary was a last minute call which fortunately produced a crisp December morning with just the faintest hint of mist eerily circling amongst the moored yachts. Graham Campbell, an erstwhile workshop and PhotoTrek attendee joined me for this quick foray before going on to his veterinary practice nearby.

I’ve also used these recent cold mornings to add to my New Forest portfolio. The forest is not too far away from home and the early mornings are not too early at this time of year.

Next month, my understanding wife Julia and I fly off to Marrakech to shoot and research for a workshop I’ve been asked to do out there, before going down to northern Spain in March to photograph in the Picos de Europa and Pyrenees. In May after Tuscany we plan to go up into the Dolomites before going back down to Provence in July again, but nearer Aix en Provence this year.

AOB

Published in this month’s Digital Photographer magazine is a four page article of a ‘One to One’ workshop that reader, Dave Johnson won as a prize from the magazine. As well as Dave’s pictures, you can also read what he really thought of the day. There are also some ghastly mug shots of yours truly – aargh!

My monthly articles in the weekend magazine of the Southern Echo are continuing with more images in the new format which is much better looking in my opinion. These articles, which consist of tips and suggestions for the relevant month, will soon be uploaded onto my website for those of you who do not live in the south of England.

COMING UP

Finishing off the Isle of Wight images first of all. Then I shall be exhibiting again at Hillier’s in Romsey as part of the Eye on the World exhibition from the end of January for a month. Interspersed with this I will be catching up on the images that have taken a back seat while I’ve been concentrating on, yes you’ve guessed it, the Isle of Wight. Some of these go back to August but I can’t stop taking pictures so I’ve just got to beetle away.

Keep practising – Best regards
Ian
